Where did this term of "artist mark" come from? Has anyone been able to say it is reliably on some dolls (pre-Mattel or whatever) and not others? I guess what I'm asking is does it really mean anything?
We bought a brand new AGOT from AG Place -- new model with the curly dark hair and medium skin (my daughter named her Keelie). Her neck says American Girl instead of Pleasant Company (which makes sense because she is a brand new model) AND she has the artist mark. Anyone else with a new doll that has the mark?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">According to a person at AG Corporate the mark on the neck near the right ear which looks like # followed by @ is the mark of the person who designed the mold and that is why it is called the artist mark or designer mark. In my opinion it doesn't really mean a whole lot since it randomly appears on the dolls. I have seen signed dolls (complete with authenticity papers) from the first year the dolls were made in 1986 as well as in other years, which do not have the mark as well as some white bodied dolls which don't have the mark and other white bodied dolls that do have it. Then it also appears on some brand new dolls and not on others. I don't think any Josefina or Kit dolls have ever had it -- but I could be wrong. The bottom line is -- it doesn't really mean a whole lot.Where did this term of "artist mark" come from? Thanks! It seemed to me that it was just another thing that eBay sellers were using to try to make their dolls seem more collectible than others. It's interesting to know they really are intentional marks identifying something though.
It makes sense it's something the artist put on there too because many G?tz dolls have it too. I have an older large G?tz doll that has the same mark as my Felicity.
